a REAL princess in the big apple

Posted on

Last weekend, you got to be a real princess – the flower girl – for my cousin Jonna’s wedding. She was such a beautiful bride, and it was so wonderful to re-connect with so many very special people – Jessica & Dave, Janessa (and got to meet Nick), Jolene & Cash, Jeremiah & Amie, Muriel & Gene, Gretchen, Bruce & Alka, Gus & Betty. It was fun to take cabs, ride the subway, get your hair done all fancy, shop and eat local fruits from a farmers’ market downtown Manhattan, sleep in a beautiful hotel… Both Saturday and Sunday morning, we spent a LOT of time snuggling and giggling and sharing interesting things for breakfast in bed – you and I took a bath together.

Here are some pictures from our adventures:

Not a day goes by when you don’t pick up a particuar leaf or two or three – just for me. Carefully selected, greatly appreciated. I so love that about you. I treasure these gifts. I am so grateful that you treasure God’s amazing creation as much as me.

I don’t remember if I shared this with you or not, but a couple months back you talked me into postponing dinner to lay on our backs in the grass and watch the clouds roll by. What an incredible experience… Thank you!!

A couple nights ago at school when I was picking you up you said again, “Mama, lay on the ground and watch the clouds with me.” We rolled around and giggled and watched the clouds. I am so grateful for the perspective you bring to my life. You change my world like no other…

You and I signed up to take Garth Fagan’s dance workshop called Jonkanoo for the 4 Wednesday’s of October. They were held at your school. We got to make masks, play interesting instruments and dance! You are such an incredible dancer! Last week, they asked for volunteers to come into the circle of about 22 kids, and make up your own dance that we would follow. Guess who was the 2nd volunteer!! YOU!! You did a Jonkanoo dance step first (the Jonkanoo march) and then you made up your own step – the frog. Everyone enjoyed following your lead. I was so proud of you!. How brave. There are about 4 four-year olds in the class, and everyone else is older. Here are some pictures:

she is so very interesting…

A woman who works at your school and has gotten to know you through after school time told me today that she talks about you all the time outside of school – she said something like, “She is so very interesting…. she is so very special.” You are. Intriguing. Talented. Empathetic. Smart.

I cannot believe I get to be your Mom.

Here are some of the things you are doing and talking about lately:

* “I don’t be-member.”
* “I don’t know where it went, Mama. It dissed-appeared!”
* “I acc-cil-enty dropped it, Mama – sorry.
* “Can we go to “Welcome to Moe’s!” tonight?”

You are still collecting rocks and leaves for me.. almost every day You are still such an outdoor girl.
You are drawing people – faces and arms and legs… It’s so fun to see you grow.
You can name all of your letters, and count to 30 (although you consistently skip 13 and 15 – you don’t seem to like those numbers.)
You love school – and excitedly tell me about things like today’s report “Mama, I learned something today – the inside of an apple is called flesh!” You love the roles you get to play: “move the arrow,” “clipboard,” “dustbuster” or “calendar.”

Here are some random pictures I haven’t shared with you but wanted to:

In a couple weeks, you will be the flower girl for my cousin Jonna’s wedding. She is marrying Rob in NYC the weekend of 10/17. While Oma and Opa were here, Oma and I took you to try on some “Princess Dresses.” The bridal store blew your mind!! There were so many women and little girls all dressed in princess dresses completely surrounded by mirrors. What a trip!!!
